BACKGROUND: The Eastern Africa Network for Bioinformatics Training (EANBiT) has matured through continuous evaluation, feedback, and codesign. We highlight how the program has evolved to meet challenges and achieve its goals and how experiential learning through mini projects enhances the acquisition of skills and collaboration. We continued to learn and grow through honest feedback and evaluation of the program, trainers, and modules, enabling us to provide robust training even during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, when we had to redesign the program due to restricted travel and in person group meetings. RESULTS: In response to the pandemic, we developed a program to maintain "residential" training experiences and benefits remotely. We had to answer the following questions: What must change to still achieve the RT goals? What optimal platforms should be used? How would we manage connectivity and data challenges? How could we avoid online fatigue? Going virtual presented an opportunity to reflect on the essence and uniqueness of the program and its ability to meet the objective of strengthening bioinformatics skills among the cohorts of students using different delivery approaches. It allowed an increase in the number of participants. Evaluating each program component is critical for improvement, primarily when feedback feeds into the program's continuous amendment. Initially, the participants noted that there were too many modules, insufficient time, and a lack of hands-on training as a result of too much focus on theory. In the subsequent iterations, we reduced the number of modules from 27 to five, created a harmonized repository for the materials on GitHub, and introduced project-based learning through the mini projects. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate that implementing a program design through detailed monitoring and evaluation leads to success, especially when participants who are the best fit for the program are selected on an appropriate level of skills, motivation, and commitment.

This study presents a design-based research approach involving five iterations (semester) of implementing design thinking for engaged learning (DTEL) in an animal science capstone course. DTEL scaffolds design thinking into 10 stages for collaborative project-based learning to foster skills like problem solving and teamwork. Across five semesters (spring 2021 to spring 2023), student reflections (n = 276) were analyzed to identify aspects that worked well or were challenging. Network analysis visualized relationships (P < 0.05; Q > 0.4) between codes representing strengths, struggles, and alignment with principles from learning theories. Utilizing the relationships between strengths and theory-based principles to address struggles, resulted in changes to the design of the capstone course each iteration (time that the course was taught). The complexity of maps increased over iterations. Initially, struggles were prominent but decreased as responsive design refinements were made. Alignment of student experiences with principles from learning theories grew substantially from the first iteration to the last (theory-related nodes representing 11.4% vs. 24.4% in each network map, respectively), with learning theories also occupying more central positions in the last map (iteration five) compared to earlier ones (iterations one through four). These changes suggest student experiences increasingly aligned with principles of cognitive constructivism, social constructivism, constructionism, situated learning, and transformative learning. Design principles derived from the five-iteration study include: (1) allocating most time to hands-on lab work vs. lecture, (2) designating a coordinator faculty, (3) scaffolding for instructors unfamiliar with DTEL, (4) emphasizing consistency in processes over grades, and (5) intentionally developing teamwork skills. The study demonstrates the value of design-based research for iteratively refining and studying learning experiences to foster critical skills for undergraduate students in animal science.

This study rigorously examines Project-Based Learning's (PBL) efficacy in augmenting creative thinking within educational frameworks. It investigates PBL's alignment with psychological tenets and cognitive processes to bolster creative capacities. Employing an extensive literature review, the research scrutinizes PBL's psychological and educational merits, project design, student engagement, cognitive growth, and the amalgamation of intellectual and affective elements. Findings reveal PBL's adaptability to cognitive rhythms, its role in amplifying information intake and motivation, and its enhancement of cognitive engagement and dynamic thought application. PBL's versatility aids in customizing education and fostering innovation. The study also addresses educator-led guidance in navigating cognitive obstacles and underscores the significance of merging intellectual and emotional aspects in PBL. It identifies challenges in PBL implementation and suggests avenues for future inquiry. Conclusively, PBL is posited as a potent tool in nurturing student creativity, adaptable to varied learning preferences and styles.

Project-based learning (PBL) has been found to exert a positive influence on learners' academic achievements, while also fostering their intrinsic motivation and playing a crucial role in nurturing sustainable learning capacities. Understanding individual differences in self-regulated learning (SRL) within project-based foreign language learning can guide language teachers in delivering personalized instruction. This study utilized a blended learning management system to collect and analyze data on SRL from 95 learners enrolled in a project-based College English course. Through microanalysis, latent profile analysis (LPA), and epistemic network analysis (ENA), the study identified distinct learner profiles and traced their developmental trajectories in project-based language learning. The findings revealed that PBL facilitates the occurrence of SRL behaviors and strengthens connections across different regulation phases. Notably, learners with diverse profiles displayed variations in their SRL epistemic network structures and developmental trajectories. These results highlight the dynamic nature of SRL within the PBL context, underscoring the significance of considering individual differences and supporting learners' evolving self-regulatory behaviors and strategies throughout their engagement in PBL activities. To enhance SRL in PBL, educators are encouraged to provide scaffolding support, promote help-seeking behaviors, and implement interventions targeting metacognitive processes and reflective practices.

Background In Japan, effective educational methods to promote understanding of developmental disorders (DD) among young people have not been established, something that is necessary for an inclusive society. Aims This paper aimed to identify both the positive aspects and areas for improvement in a problem-solving program for middle and high school students on the topic of DD called inochi Gakusei Innovators Program (i-GIP). The study also sought to determine the changes in attitudes toward DD that occurred as a result of participating in the program. Method Semi-structured interviews were conducted online, with middle and high school students who participated in i-GIP, university students who helped manage the program, and cooperators with DD or their families. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted, and codes and themes were identified. Results Positive aspects of i-GIP included its project-based learning approach, raising awareness and understanding of developmental disorders, and the proactive attitude of the students. Areas for improvement in the program were identified, including program administration and addressing challenges related specifically to DD. Changes in attitudes and behavior toward DD were reported, along with improvements in interpersonal relationships. Conclusions and implications This study suggests that incorporating a project-based approach can be a useful manner to learn about DD among young people.

In K-12 STEM education, engineering design is emphasized, as demonstrated by the bridge-design project. Due to the iterative nature of engineering design, engineering practice is frequently complicated and requires pedagogical guidance. As an emerging pedagogy in STEM education, REP (Reverse Engineering Pedagogy) is showing, but not enough, some benefits in several cases. This paper aims to explore the effects of REP in a bridge-design course. A comparison experiment, REP versus PBL (Project-Based Learning), was conducted by randomly forming two groups of fourth-grade students from a primary school in China. Results indicated that REP was more advantageous than PBL in terms of decreasing students' cognitive load, boosting their scientific knowledge level and engineering design skills. However, REP and PBL have the same effect on the students' learning attitude and engagement. The key findings, possible reasons, and suggestions for practice are also discussed.

Background: High-ability students require effective educational strategies. This study introduces and evaluates a curriculum enrichment programme aimed at enhancing cre ativity. The programme is based on a competency framework and was implemented using variations of Project-Based Learning (PBL) strategies. Method: A quasi-experimental design compared two interventions using pre-test and post-test groups. The first intervention (N = 38) involved a 12-week PBL unit focused on designing a video game using block-based program ming through Scratch. The second intervention (N = 51), also lasting 12 weeks, comprised three separate projects involving vectorial design and programming of an Arduino-based ro bot. Both interventions used strategies for creative-thinking development. The sample includ ed high-ability students from 8 to 12 years of age. Results: Both interventions significantly increased creativity, with no statistical differences between them. This suggests that both types of PBL interventions effectively improved participants' creativity. Conclusions: This study suggests that PBL-based curricular enrichment programmes are effective in fostering creativity among high-ability students.


Antecedentes: Los estudiantes con alta capacidad requieren estrategias educativas efectivas. Este estudio presenta y evalúa un programa de enriquecimiento curricular diseñado para mejorar la creatividad. El programa se basa en un marco de competencias y se implemen tó utilizando variaciones de estrategias de aprendizaje basado en proyectos (ABP). Método: Un diseño cuasi-experimental comparó dos intervenciones utilizando grupos pretest y postest. La primera intervención consistió en una unidad de ABP de 12 semanas centrada en el diseño de un videojuego utilizando programación basada en bloques mediante Scratch. La segunda intervención, también de 12 semanas de duración, consistió en tres proyectos independientes de diseño vectorial y programación de un robot basado en Arduino. En ambas intervencio nes se utilizaron estrategias para el desarrollo del pensamiento creativo. La muestra incluía estudiantes con altas capacidades de entre 8 y 12 años. Resultados: Ambas intervenciones aumentaron significativamente la creatividad, sin diferencias estadísticas entre ellas. Esto sugiere que ambos tipos de intervenciones de ABP mejoraron efectivamente la creatividad de los participantes. Conclusiones: Este estudio sugiere que los programas de enriquecimiento curricular basados en ABP son efectivos para fomentar la creatividad entre los estudiantes con altas capacidades.

Project-based learning (PBL) is a teaching methodology that allows students to acquire knowledge and competencies through the completion of projects that respond to real-life problems. The aims of this study were to evaluate the acquisition of knowledge of students of the Aging Nursing subject through a PBL-based intervention and determine the degree of student satisfaction with the use of this methodology. A mixed, quasi-experimental, pre-post study was conducted without a control group using an educational intervention based on PBL and descriptive phenomenology with content analysis of the experiences reported after it. A knowledge questionnaire about nursing homes was administered before the start of the intervention. After using PBL to carry out the subject project, the same knowledge questionnaire and an ad hoc questionnaire on satisfaction, assessment, and improvement aspects were administered. In total, 111 nursing students participated. The difference in knowledge after the educational intervention was significant. The mean pre-intervention score was 5.56, SD 1.50, and the mean post-intervention score was 7.14, SD 1.59, (p = 0.001). In total, 74% of the students stated that they were very satisfied with the use of this methodology. The students had a positive perspective on the process of acquiring knowledge that PBL allows. The students improved their knowledge about the planning and management of nursing homes with the use of the project-based learning teaching methodology. They were very satisfied with said activity. Teachers must be adequately trained for the correct implementation of this teaching methodology. This study was not registered.

Over 60 million tons of E-waste is expected to be generated in 2023, with associated significant impacts on health and the environment. To reduce the number of products sent to landfills, "Right to Repair" (RtR) movements are gaining momentum in many countries, including the UK, USA, and EU member states. While Universities are seen as important stakeholders to drive forward sustainable design practices, there is currently little work looking at training undergraduate design engineers in the principles of designing household products in support of RtR. In particular, the project-based learning (PBL) pedagogy shows promise in engaging and training students with the skills and knowledge required to successfully design products for RtR. In this paper, a pilot-study of teaching engineers is presented to design products compatible with RtR principles, alongside many technical skills, in a first-year PBL course. The key outputs of this paper are the design of the module, which can be used to help inform first-year engineering education, the high engagement of students, with 100% of respondents agreeing that they intend to try to implement sustainable design practices in future, and some of the innovative features that students implement in their projects.

Objetivo: evaluar el aprendizaje y la metodología de un trabajo académico sobre el diseño de una actividad comunitaria local.Método: estudio evaluativo mixto realizado en estudiantes de Enfermería. Tras una introducción teórica a 144 estudiantes sobre acción comunitaria se formaron equipos que, durante dos meses, realizaron un análisis de población parcialmente real, mapeo de activos, búsqueda bibliográfica para conocer los estilos de vida, búsqueda y análisis crítico de experiencias comunitarias anteriores y diseño de una propuesta de actividad. El profesorado la calificó mediante rúbrica (0 a 10 puntos) y se ofreció al alumnado evaluarla mediante cuatro preguntas abiertas y dos cerradas (interés suscitado y necesidad de mantener la actividad formativa -escalas Likert de 1 mín. a 5 máx.-). Se llevaron a cabo índices estadísticos descriptivos y análisis de contenido.Resultados: realizaron la actividad 27 grupos que obtuvieron una calificación mediana de 8,17 puntos. La evaluaron 96 estudiantes que consideraron que era interesante (x–= 4,29) y debía mantenerse (x–= 4,17). Identificaron como “necesarios” e importantes los proyectos de promoción de la salud en la comunidad local y el trabajo compartido con ella. Reflejaron haber descubierto otro campo de acción profesional. Apenas reflejaron visión salutogénica y encontraron dificultades para enfocar la tarea, en la búsqueda de bibliografía y de experiencias previas.Conclusión: la actividad fue resuelta con éxito por los estudiantes y logró en el corto plazo la familiarización con el trabajo comunitario que buscaba. El alumnado encontró dificultades para desarrollar la metodología, pero percibieron la actividad como interesante y relevante. (AU)


Objective: to evaluate the level of learning and the methodology of an academic paper on the design of a local community activity.Method: a mixed evaluative study conducted on Nursing students. After a theoretical introduction on community action, 144 students formed teams and, during two months, conducted a partially real population analysis, article mapping and bibliographic search in order to understand the lifestyles, search and critical analysis of previous community experiences, and design a proposal of activity. Professors graded it through signature (0 to 10 scores), and students were offered an evaluation through four open questions and two closed-ended questions (interest generated and the need to maintain the training activity, Likert scales with min. 1 to max. 5). Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted, as well as content analysis.Results: the activity was conducted by 27 groups, who achieved a median score of 8.17. It was then evaluated by 96 students, who considered that it was interesting (x–= 4.29) and should be maintained (x–= 4.17). They identified as “necessary” and important the health promotion projects in the local community and the work shared with it. They showed that they had discovered another area of professional action. They scarcely showed salutogenic vision and had difficulties to focus the task on a search for bibliography and previous experiences.Conclusion: the activity was successfully conducted by students, and the desired familiarity with the community work was achieved at short term. Students met difficulties to develop the methodology but perceived the activity as interesting and relevant. (AU)

BACKGROUND: Due to COVID-19, face-to-face service activities in service-learning courses have become unfeasible. To address this challenge, this study aims to integrate project-based learning into medical education's service-learning curriculum. This study also seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of this instructional approach and identify factors that influence its success. METHODS: A total of 135 first-year medical students enrolled in a mandatory 1-credit service-learning course were recruited. The course involved various service activities aligned with the needs of the local community. The students were organized into 12 groups, each working on different service-learning projects, such as raising health awareness or educating the public about specific diseases. Following the completion of the course, a questionnaire was distributed among the students to gather feedback on the course, and 122 (valid responses were collected, representing a response rate of 90.3%). RESULTS: The results indicated that the project-based service-learning course significantly improved students' "interpersonal communication skills," their ability to "learn and grow from work," and their sense of "professionalism" (all p ≤ 0.037). Among the various aspects of service learning, the highest agreement was observed for "executing the project," followed by "group discussions and project formulation," "overall course review," "review of project outcomes," "outcome presentations," "teaching proposal writing and project brainstorming," "sharing of service-learning experiences by teachers," and "sharing of service-learning experiences by teaching assistants." Students also found certain factors to be beneficial in enhancing the learning effectiveness of service-learning courses, including "prize money for service-learning outcomes," "funding for service-learning activities," and "consultations from medical personnel" (all p ≤ 0.01). However, "course credit" and "photography software" did not show significant effects (both p > 0.05). The most preferred resources or activities for future service-learning courses were "course credit" and "face-to-face service-learning activities." CONCLUSIONS: The project-based learning method improved the learning effectiveness in service-learning courses. Students perceived that the number of course credits reflects the course value and plays a pivotal role in enhancing the learning effectiveness in service-learning courses. During the epidemic, students still expect to have face-to-face service activities in service-learning courses. Therefore, without the impact of the epidemic, service learning courses should return to face-to-face service activities.

Introduction: With the educational reform for skills in the 21st century, a large number of scholars have explored project-based learning. However, whether project-based learning can effectively improve the learning effect of students has not yet reached a unified conclusion. Method: This study uses a meta-analysis method to transform 66 experimental or quasi-experimental research papers based on project-based learning over the past 20 years into 190 effect values from the sample size, mean, and standard deviation of experimental data during their experiments, and to conduct in-depth quantitative analysis. Results: The results of the study showed that compared with the traditional teaching model, project-based learning significantly improved students' learning outcomes and positively contributed to academic achievement, affective attitudes, and thinking skills, especially academic achievement. Discussion: The results of the moderating effects test indicated that the effectiveness of project-based learning and teaching was influenced by different moderating variables, including country region, subject area, type of course, academic period, group size, class size, and experimental period : (1) from the perspective of country geography, the effects of project-based learning in Asia, especially in Southeast Asia, were significantly better than those in Western Europe and North America; (2) in terms of curriculum, project-based learning promotes student learning effects more significantly in engineering and technology subjects, and is better applied in laboratory classes than in theory classes; (3) from a pedagogical point of view, project-based learning is more suitable for small group teaching, in which the group size is 4-5 people teaching the best results; (4) in view of the experimental period, 9-18 weeks is more appropriate and has more obvious advantages for application at the high school level.

Project-based learning (PBL) has been identified as an effective pedagogy for instructors to help students to learn interdisciplinary knowledge, problem-solving skills, modes of thinking, and collaborative practices through solving problems in a real-world context. However, previous studies reported that instructors from K-12 to tertiary learning environments found it challenging to implement such a pedagogy for various reasons. The emergence of PBL E-learning platforms in the recent decade has attracted increasing interest in adoption and seems to provide a solution to tackle the difficulties in PBL implementation. Yet little is known about designing these platforms and how they facilitate the PBL learning process and management. In the current study, we conducted a multiple case survey study on 16 PBL learning platforms in English and Chinese, collected data on their features and functions, categorized them according to their services provided, and analyzed how they tackle the implementation challenges. Additionally, we identified four trends in PBL development as pedagogy, the skills, and competence required for teachers and students to successfully carry out PBL via e-learning platforms and provide suggestions to improve and refine the platform design for educational technologists and related stakeholders. The limitations of this study and the future research direction are included.

Minecraft Education is a digital game-based learning platform that is thought to support the development of twenty-first century competencies and skills. The purpose of this study is to explore primary students' experiences of using Minecraft Education during an innovative national project-based initiative. The initiative had two phases: 1) educational episodes for teachers and students on how to use the platform and 2) a national competition that required students to re-imagine a sustainable version of their community. We used a mixed-methods design with a sample of classes taking part in the initiative. First, third to sixth class students (N = 173) completed a survey that examined: 1) learning opportunities with Minecraft Education, 2) ease of use, 3) usefulness, and 4) enjoyment. Eight focus group interviews were then conducted with a subsample of sixth class students (n = 30). Students indicated that 1) there were good opportunities for learning with Minecraft Education, particularly for creativity and collaboration, 2) the platform was easy to use and useful and, 3) using Minecraft Education was enjoyable. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data identified five themes: 'collaboration', 'opportunities for creativity', 'immersive learning environment', 'student engagement', and 'technology and digital skills'. This research highlights the value of innovative project-based learning activities with Minecraft Education for supporting student learning.

In the last 5 years, there have been several literature reviews or meta-analyses investigating various aspects of STEM education; however, they have investigated a specific aspect of STEM, e.g. robotics, or digital games, or Early childhood, or Teacher perspectives. In addition, a broad-reaching review on STEM integration has not been conducted in the past 10 years. This article reports findings from a Systematic Qualitative Literature Review concerning STEM education for children aged 4-12 in formal education contexts. To provide context, the article initially presents descriptive findings (date and country of research, age of participants, research setting, and research methodologies used) in the 60 research articles that are included for analysis. The article then answers three research questions regarding the: (1) level of integration evident in the studies; (2) role of engineering in any such integration; and (3) teaching approaches used in the studies. Findings from this research suggest that there is still much work to be done to move from scenarios where STEM integration is claimed but is not evident in practice. To do so we encourage educators and researchers to (a) focus on authentic interdisciplinary approaches rather than the siloed approaches evident in the existing research; and (b) use a teaching approach such as problem-based or project-based learning that provide opportunities for authentic integration.

BACKGROUND: The development of educational research, critical thinking skills, and evidence-based practice requires proposals for educational innovation. The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of undergraduate nursing students on the barriers and facilitators after the implementation of a novel activity within the course of research methodology, composed of three active learning strategies: (a) project-based learning; (b) small-group learning; and (c) self-directed learning. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study using reflective writing was conducted at the Nursing Department of the Red Cross School (Spain). Seventy-four nursing students participated in the study, enrolled in the research methodology course. Purposive sampling was used. Online reflective notes were collected from a script of open-ended questions. An inductive thematic analysis was performed. RESULTS: The new proposals facilitated learning of the subject matter and its contents. They were useful and enabled the students to put the contents into practice. In addition, they improved the students' organization, planning, and involvement. The barriers identified were a lack of time, ambiguity, inadequate tutoring or novelty of the work, and inequity in the distribution of tasks and workloads. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings shed light on the barriers and facilitators identified by nursing students when implementing an educational innovation proposal, using three active learning methodologies as learning tools for the subject of nursing research.

Sustainable Engineering education must provide cyber-physical and distributed systems competencies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The COVID-19 pandemic caused profound impacts arising from a traditional on-site teaching model rupture and demanded distance learning for engineering students. In this context, we considered the following Research Questions (RQ): How can Project Based Learning (PjBL) be applied in hardware and software courses from the Engineering curriculum to foster practical activities during the COVID-19 pandemic? Is the student performance in the fully remote offering comparable to the face-to-face offering? (RQ1); Which Sustainable Development Goals are related to the Engineering students' project themes? (RQ2). Regarding RQ1, we present how PjBL was applied in first-, third- and fifth-year Computer Engineering Courses to support 31 projects of 81 future engineers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Student grades in a Software Engineering course indicate no relevant differences between student performance in remote and face-to-face offerings. Regarding RQ2, most Computer Engineering students from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo in 2020 and 2021 decided to create projects related to SDG 3-Good Health and Well-being, SDG 8-Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities. Most projects were related to health and well-being, which was an expected behavior according to how health issues were brought into highlight during the pandemic.

What training should engineering students receive to enable them to contribute to reducing bias, discrimination and the persistent lack of diversity in engineering? Collaboration is central to professional engineering work and, consequently, teamwork and group projects are increasingly present in engineering curricula. However, the influence of unconscious bias on interactions within teams can negatively affect women and underrepresented groups and is now recognised as an important engineering ethics issue. This paper describes a workshop designed to enable engineering students to work equitably in diverse teams. Key features of the workshop include (1) the emotionally safe, empowering and warm environment created, (2) the creation of opportunities for students to discuss and apply the issues raised to their own engineering projects, and (3) the opportunities to practice the use of both proactive and reactive strategies to address bias and discrimination in teams. The evaluation of the workshop suggests that engineering students regarded both onsite and online formats as providing useful skills that they intended to apply in practice. Follow-up evaluations suggest that the workshop leads to behavioural change, especially the use of proactive teamwork strategies intended to reduce the impact of unconscious bias.

The need for computer science (CS) education, especially computer network education, is increasing. However, the challenges of teaching students with diverse backgrounds and engaging them in hands-on activities to apply theories into practices exist in CS education. The study addressed the challenges by using project-based learning (PBL) and flipped teaching approaches to cover both theoretical and hands-on learning aspects in CS education. This study aims to demonstrate the design and development journey of a CS course and examine whether using PBL, hands-on activities, and flipped teaching approaches improves students' learning. The design-based research study was conducted in an undergraduate CS course from 2014 to 2020 at a midwestern university. The design and development trajectory in the six years were described. The descriptive statistics were used to analyze the trends of the course evaluation results, and ANOVA were conducted to examine whether the evaluation differs from each semester. The results indicated that using PBL, hands-on activities, and flipped teaching increased students' learning motivation and their perceptions of their learning. Combining PBL and flipped teaching appropriately can enhance students' learning motivation and perceived learning in CS education, but further research is needed to examine how each individual intervention influence students' learning motivation and learning outcomes.
